Tetradrachm circa 460 BC, Naxos, Sicily, Italy, Carabinieri

 


Bearded and ivy-wreathed head of Dionysus,  hair tied in krobylos at back of neck. 

Silenos, nude and ithyphallic, squatting on the ground, raising a cantharus to his lips and supporting himself with his left hand.  Ν – ΑXΙ – ΟΝ 

This is the same type as smuggled and sold by Richard Beale of Roma Numismatics, except that the provenance for this example is from the collection of Baron von Bullßhittte.
